Bodhisattva Jogyo (Vishishta charithra)

In the 16th chapter (Life span of Thathagatha) that comes in the Primordial eight chapters of Lotus Sutra, Buddha reveals his true form as the eternal existence of Primordial Buddha from the remote past (ku-on).
Appeared in this sacred form of Primordial Buddha, he embedded the bliss of his enlightenment into the doctrine that later reappeared in the latter day of Dharma (Mappo era) as Namu Myoho Renge Kyo (Odaimoku).
Further in the 21st chapter (Supernatural Powers of Buddha), he stated “soon I will make myself temporarily disappear from this world yet entrusting this teaching to be propagated in the aftermath of my disappearance on my behalf”
and entrusted a single Bodhisattva to this mission, called Bodhisattva Jogyo who is being the best disciple of Primordial Buddha in the remote past according to the scriptures.

So when & how did this Bodhisattva Jogyo appear in the Mappo era and propagate us the Great doctrine of Odaimoku? Reappearance of this Bodhisattva Jogyo was precisely Great Buddhist Master Nichiren.

Great Master Nichiren was born in the year 1222 in Japan and conducted a two decade long research into Buddhist Teachings finally arriving at the realization that Lotus sutra is the greatest among various Buddhist Teachings.
Hence in 1253, at the age of 32 he dedicated his life for the propagation of Lotus Sutra widely and correctly throughout the world.

Nearly about 20 years into his endeavor of propagating the teachings of Lotus Sutra, Nichiren obtained the self-realization that he himself is the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Jogyo.
In the scriptures of Lotus Sutra it was preached that, the practitioner of Lotus sutra in the Mappo era who propagate its teachings on Buddha’s behalf shall encounter various hardships such as exile banishments, persecutions from swords & staves,
even life attempts. Also it was preached that the guardian gods shall rescue such practitioner from each & every persecution.
Great Master Nichiren experienced various hardships, enmity, persecutions during his propagation Bodhisattva efforts and was rescued every time precisely as prophesized in the Sutra.
Thus it was occurred to him that he himself is the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Jogyo, the disciple of Primordial Buddha.

Nichiren Shonin propagated us Namu Myoho Renge Kyo, which is the prescribed practice for us who were born in this Mappo era, throughout his life. Let’s discuss what is Namu Myoho Renge Kyo and its importance to us.
